Information about the first Epee/Sabre event of the 2008-2009 SoCal Youth Challenge. The past seasons of this series have been very successful in all three weapons. These events are for unrated fencers and are not sanctioned so no ratings will be awarded. Updated information is also available at www.socalyouthchallenge.com. Info will also be posted on askfred. These events allow our youth fencers to get much needed tournament experience on a local level. Thank you. Geoff Russell

NEWS!!! First Competition of year Results: John fenced very well at this weekend’s tournament! First, in the Y14 Foil, he won 4 of the 5 pool bouts. Unfortunately, after placing out of the pools at 7th, John got stopped in the first DE round 15-11. It was tied for most of the time, then his opponent got up 12-11 with about 50 seconds left. Under time pressure, John went aggressive trying to even the score and walked into getting hit, which deepened the deficit and the desperation. So he finished 17th in a field of 33 fencers. Second, in the Y12 Foil, he won 3 of the 5 pool bouts. Again, John got stopped in the first DE round by the fencer who went on to win 2nd. So he finished 11th out of 19 fencers. Neither tournaments’ final result really reflected his total performance considering that he won 7 out of 10 pool bouts; he just had difficulty in the DE rounds. Furthermore, this year, he’s an 11-year old in the Y-12 and the Y-14 is a full age section up.
